a body calligraphy series on the weapons hidden inside our most ordinary words, written onto the body with the weapons themselves.

seria kaligrafii na ciele o broni zaklętej w słowie, pisana na ciele tą samą bronią.

the premise
założenie

the weapon was always in the word.

broń zawsze była w słowie.

chinese characters are built out of small repeated parts, and a surprising number of those parts began as drawings of weapons. a knife. an axe. a bow, an arrow, a dagger-axe. when the pictures stopped being pictures the weapons did not leave the writing… they settled into ordinary words instead, and some of the words they settled into are the gentlest ones the language has. knowing. closeness. swearing yourself to another person. the self.

most people read those words every day and never notice what is sitting inside them. that not-noticing is the real subject of this work.

the violence has been carried quietly in the writing for three thousand years. for a brief moment it can be seen, on skin, for as long as the paint lasts.

the method is literal on purpose. each character is written with the weapon it carries or evokes. severance is cut with the axe. the blade that pierces the heart is written with the knife. the tools are real and the marks are real, and the writing is the performance… the stills are what remains of an act that only existed while the paint was still moving.

the artist behind the brush is marked with the same word she writes on everyone else. that is the whole argument of the piece in one image. she writes the sentence and she carries it. the weapon comes out of a language she speaks too.

the arc runs in five movements. two bodies carry one vow that neither of them holds in full. the tie between them is cut with the tools that were hiding in the characters for cutting. a self convenes a court over itself and fills every seat in the room. a claim of worth is made in a word that already contains a blade. and then everything folds back into the single character 我, which was the name of a serrated weapon before it ever meant i.

that etymology is the thesis. whoever says i in this language holds something edged in their mouth.

賜我最後心願 and 承你穿心之刃, one phrase per arm, the knife held at the centre

grant me my last wish… let me hold the blade you will pierce me with.

spełnij moje ostatnie życzenie… pozwól mi trzymać ostrze, którym mnie dźgniesz.

some destructions begin as requests. some people ask permission to be ruined and call the permission love.
the two phrases carried by two bodies, the knife between them

the sentence is split across two people so that neither body owns the whole of it, and the knife stays in the hands of the one who wrote both halves.

neither person can read their own line without the other body present… the vow only exists in the space between them, and the blade is the only word in it that admits what it is.

severingzerwanie

both characters grow from the thread radical 糸… in old script, ties between people were literally written as silk. 斷 conceals an axe inside its strokes, 絕 conceals a knife.

chinese buried the ending of every bond inside the words for bonding itself, as if the language always knew that whatever can be tied can be cut, and kept the tools ready inside the writing, waiting.

one character on each back, the wrists bound, the thread severed between them. the thread that binds the wrists is the same thread hiding in both characters.

the axe rests on the back that carries the axe character, the knife on the back that carries the knife character.

the wrists bound, the thread severed
the figure that writes standing over the writing

red arrives on 絕 and stays away from everything else in the frame. severance is the one event the colour is reserved for, and it is spilled here… after this there is nothing left to cut.

the courtsąd

be your own judge. your own prisoner. your own grave.

własny sędzia. własny więzień. własny grób.

自做… self-made, self-appointed. the phrase repeats three times like a verdict read aloud.

no character here contains a weapon, because self-punishment never needed one… the judge and the condemned wake up in the same body every morning.

the court that convenes inside a person runs on words alone, and it never adjourns, and no appeal exists.

自做法官, 自做囚犯, 自做墳墓, the eyes cut out of every frame by the window edge

the eyes are cut out of every frame by the window edge. a body wears the sentence. the seal under each phrase is the mark an authority leaves on a document it has approved… here the authority and the document are the same body.

worthwartość

i am worth everything.

jestem warta wszystkiego.

一切 means everything… split it open and 一 is one, 切 is cut.

一切 znaczy wszystko… rozłożone: 一 to jeden, 切 to ciąć.

worth and wound share the same characters, as if the language decided long ago that they could not be written apart.

a claim of value made in words where everything already contains the blade… as if to say worth was never going to arrive without a cost, and that whoever demands everything should know what the word is made of.

the arm that makes the claim is the arm that carries it out. the sentence runs from the shoulder to the hand, so the demand and the instrument end in the same place… whatever everything turns out to cost, it is charged to the body that asked.

tool: brush, knife. written along the forearm.narzędzie: pędzel, nóż. pisane wzdłuż przedramienia.

the selfja

before 我 ever meant i, it was the name of a serrated weapon… the first person and the instrument of harm share one ancestor.

zanim 我 zaczęło znaczyć ja, było nazwą ząbkowanej broni… pierwsza osoba i narzędzie krzywdy mają jednego przodka.

the etymology is the thesis: the self was never neutral.

whoever says i in this language holds something edged in their mouth.
kto mówi ja w tym języku, trzyma w ustach broń.
我 put on the throat, where speech comes from, cut with the axe
the sequence closes alone, the tool lowered but not put down

the one who writes every other mark is marked with the same word, and it is cut with the axe. judge, prisoner, grave, wish, thread, cut… every word in the sequence was only ever this one word turned outward, and at the end it turns home.

the word is put on the throat, where speech comes from, and written with the heaviest tool on the shoot. the self is the first thing the violence was used to write.

the sequence closes where it began, alone, with the tool lowered but not put down. nothing is resolved and nothing is forgiven… the paint will wash off tonight and the word will still be built the way it is built.

what sits underneath
co skrywa się za słowami

four ideas sit under the work.

za tą pracą leżą cztery idee.

symbolic violence · bourdieuprzemoc symboliczna · bourdieu

a violence that works through language and everyday habit instead of force, absorbed without noticing, and strong because of that. the weapon radicals are a literal picture of it: domination folded into the sign until the sign reads as completely normal.

the violence we cannot see · žižekprzemoc, której nie widzimy · žižek

in violence (2008) the visible violence of an act is separated from two quieter kinds, one carried in language and one built into the systems we live inside. those are hard to see because they are the background everything else is measured against. this work makes that background briefly visible on skin.

closeness as a wound · lacanbliskość jako rana · lacan

entering language is already a kind of cut, and closeness carries that cut at its centre. love as giving what you do not have to someone who does not want it, staged directly between two arms. the weapon is what intimacy was made of.
